Week of Mar. 10th-19th:
           (subject to change!)

Reading (7th)

Students are nearly finished reading The Cay. They have an LAP - a Learning Activity Packet - to work on during this unit.  Activities will be completed in class, some individually and some in a small group (to which I will assign them.)  Students are reading chapters 16-19 and will be discussing the end of the plot over the next 2 class days.  LAP activities will be completed by Mar. 22/23.

They will discuss and add a new word to their vocabulary list in each class.  After every 4-5 words, there will be a vocab. quiz, over all the words they've had so far.
They will do some independent reading of library books each day and write in journals every week.

*Their 4th book project is due May 13th/14th. They will be allowed to work on projects in class. They have a list of 16+ project options from which to choose. They are not allowed to begin their project until they have finished their approved novel. **It is important to me that I see them reading that book in class every day, and that they write about it in their journal while reading it!

Literature (8th)

Students have been finishing the reading of The Pigman.  We will be discussing chapters 12-15 during the next two class days and will have a test on Mar. 22/23, after creating characterization posters.

**Journals - will write at least three times every 2 weeks.   Students will also read independently every day from library books.

Students will write four structured book reports, including three required fiction genres, and the 4th book report will be their choice of the three genres.  The 4th rough draft will be due by May 6th/7th.  They are always encouraged to write them as soon as they finish their approved book!  **They are expected to read these books in my room during Lit. class, and must write about them in their journals as they are reading.

Short Story 2

Students are experiencing science fiction short stories, reading and discussing in class.  These require them to stretch their imaginations considerably.

Mythology

Students have completed chapter 9 in our text.  Currently they are studying a variety of Greek/Roman heroes by creating small group presentations.  Each group will teach the class about their assigned heroes.  We are nearly finished with our Greek/Roman unit, will have a test, and continue with Norse mythology.

Individualized Reading

Students read every day in class, recording book titles and specific pages read.  They are required to conference with me 5 times this semester (biography or nonfiction, & 4 fiction).   ***Books used for conferences must be ones read in my room (75%).
